Audition extension - last call

If you want to audition for Jack, Ellis, or Clare, now is the time! Please have your files sent in to me by the end of the week Sunday, January 23rd. omigod get it together Chai  FEBRUARY THE 3RD.

Auditions for Jack, Clare, and Ellis!

Auditions, Round 1
Chapter 1-4

VERY IMPORTANT: We need men! I have not received a single sound check from any male-sounding voices at all. In chapter 1 alone, there are 11 male-sounding, American accented voices other than Jack's. Most of these are just one or a handful of lines. If you can read just a few lines for us, or you can rope your brother/boyfriend/friend/dad/neighbor into helping us out (and of course maybe discover the Dead Isle along the way~~ >.>) that would be awesome.

Parts Available to Audition For:

Notes: I tried to remove as much of the dialogue tags and stuff as I could, where I could, as I understand it can take you a bit out of character to switch back and forth. Some places, though, I had to leave them in. Ellis, for instance, has many more monologuey bits, and cutting out little dialogue tags didn't make much difference, but Jack's lines are usually on the short side, and it wouldn't have made sense for me to cut out everything in between. Go ahead and read the whole segment in the accent the character is meant to be speaking in, even the dialogue tags and such, so you don't have to break character. We'll take care of the rest. :)

1. Name your file [Character-userid.mp3] i.e. Clare-dirtydirtychai.mp3

2. Drop your file into the
GDrive folder.
3. Fill out
this spreadsheet with your information.

Use the name or screen name you want to be credited with. In the chapter-by-chapter podcast, we’ll credit the readers each episode/chapter, unless you ask to be uncredited. When we release the whole book as podfic, we’ll have a page with the full cast listed.

If you have any trouble dropping the file into the GDrive folder or otherwise accessing GDrive, you can email it to me with the following information:
Username (platform) [ Ex: dirtydirtychai (LJ and DW) ]
Email OR Alternate contact

Please let me know if the directions are unclear or if you have any questions or comments or special circumstances.

Deadline is set for January 21. That's two weeks, and if we have to extend that like we did the sound checks, I'll let you know. :)

ETA:
Just a note to clarify *why* we're still auditioning the Jack and Ellis if there aren't any men - toward the beginning, I DID get a handful of guys who were interested in reading for them. But only a couple of those signed up on the crew sheet, and only one has gotten back to me since then. If we end up with only one person sending in an audition for Jack or Ellis - congrats, you've got the part!

Update

Hey all! Sound check submissions are still coming in, so we're extending the deadline (you may have noticed the conspicuous lack of post about auditions... yeah, sorry, totally dropped the ball on that.)

So if you still need to send in your soundcheck, go right ahead!

I'll be posting the list of scripts for the first round of auditions (the principal cast, basically, and those from the first part of the book) tomorrow.

Sound Check Submissions Begin Now

We are now accepting sound checks! If you are reading anything at all for this project, you MUST submit a sound check.

Sound Checks

Dear everyone who signed up to read for the podfic and intends to audition for a major character part,

We are going to need all of you to send in sound checks before we begin the auditioning process. I'll be posting on LJ, DW, and Tumblr about the specs next Monday (Dec. 17), and Sam will also make a post on his journal.

I'll also be posting our calendar of deadlines for audition submissions.

Stay tuned! :D

Update: stuff we need to go over before auditioning

So, "going to post this weekend" turned into "some time this month or the next." Sorry, guys. RL has been hectic.

On the docket today:
1. Getting more Aussie and Indigenous participation
2. Audiobook vs. Podcast
3. Sound quality checks
4. Phase 2 - Auditioning
5. Compiling/editing

[community profile] deadislepodfic: podficcing [personal profile] copperbadge's new novel the Dead Isle with a full cast
The year is 1880, and Jack Baker is a young, driven student at Harvard University for Engineers. In this America, industry depends on "Creation" magic rather than machines, and most engineers are train repairmen, not inventors like Jack. Even his Creationist friend Clare thinks Jack's genius is going to waste at Harvard. There is one man who knows how to put Jack to use, however: famous novelist and sometimes spy Ellis Graveworthy, who wants Jack to come with him to England and build him a flying ship. Graveworthy has been ordered to cross the heavily-guarded coast of Australia, the "Dead Isle" which has no Creation, and which sealed itself off from the outside world more than twenty years before. Rumors abound that Australia is building a war fleet, intent on conquest, and it's Graveworthy's job to stop it...

I call this meeting to order

Hi all! I, uh, don't really know what to say here other than welcome and I'm super excited to see this amount of interest in the project. :D  Between this, DW, and Facebook, we've got about 40 people (and their children and boyfriends lol) signed up so far.

There are a couple of things I need to go over with you guys. First off, please note that I am not terribly familiar with using the LJ or DW community system, so if I'm doing things inefficiently or incorrectly, please please please let me know.

Now, to business:

1) Casting
I am really pleased that we've got enough people onboard that a full cast version is even possible, but of course, now there's the issue of deciding who gets what role. I don't want to do something like make the casting calls myself - that defeats the purpose of this being a cafe love child in the first place - though I guess I will if I have to.

So what do you guys think of posting audio clip "auditions" and having the cafe vote on it over on Sam's blog? Obviously, there are lots of people who love the books and have their own headcanons and headvoices for the characters that don't want to participate in the actual podficcing part, but this is a small way for everyone to have their little bit of input.

(And I do think we're very mature and would behave in good taste, but the last thing a big collab project like this needs is - while I trust that it wouldn't escalate to the level of wank - mixed feelings about participation. All easily avoidable with a public poll.)

Thoughts?

2) Admin/Mods
A few people mentioned that they'd be willing to help with the organazational side of things, and if you're still up for it, I could really use your help! Once things get underway, it would be nice to divvy up duties between people, or even just have someone to monitor for additional volunteers in comments that I may miss. One big thing that I could use help with is...

3) The Character List
When the book comes out on the 1st, I will be going through the PDF and compiling a list of characters and their accents. Once we know how many charcters there are and what accents we need, then we can get an idea of how to divvy up the speaking parts. This is, as you can imagine, not a small tast.

I've already started compiling a list of characters (which will probably change a bit with the published copy) and their corresponding accents. Many aren't really specified but we can guess (Nigel on the ship, for instance), and others are really specific (Purva, who starts out with a French accent but picks up Australian very easily).

I know lots of us are going to be rereading The Dead Isle when it is released on the 1st. If you would be willing to take note of the characters with dialogue and help me with the character list, please comment below. If we get multiple people, we can separate it up into chapter groups. The more, the merrier!

4) The Crew List
I've made up a chart of our volunteers and what you volunteered for, what accents you can do, etc., based on the comments you left. Please go check and see that I read your comments correctly! Some of you said things like "I can do accents" which I took to mean all accents and marked x's all across the board. Some of you mentioned narration specifically, so I didn't put you down for reading a character - which might not be what you meant. So please, go check and make corrections! Add categories or accents as needed. People who specified being male are marked in blue.

Also, some of you commented only on Facebook, as far as I can tell, and I am unaware of any other username by which to address you. If you prefer to go by your LJ/DW handle and don't want your name listed, please change it accordingly.

When you make changes to the document, be very careful that you're not marking x's on someone else's row and be sure to save it.

Podficcing The Dead Isle

Hi all~

So, copperbadge's The Dead Isle

I loved reading it the first time, loved it even more the second time, and I even broke out of my chronic lurking habit to participate a little in the editing for self-pub process, such was my love of this book. It's become one of my comfort reads, and I am super excited about it being available soon in actual book form.

But sometimes, I like to listen to my books. Especially my comfort reads. There are certain audiobooks and podfics of fandom favorites that I always turn on when I have a project to work on (like FayJay's The Student Prince [podfic here]).

I was painting the other day, as you do, and scrolling through the audiobooks in my iTunes playlist and, while in the mood for a little steampunk adventuring, I settled instead on Neil Gaiman's American Gods, the 10th anniversary full cast version.

Too bad there's no podfic of The Dead Isle yet, I thought.

Wow, this full cast version of American Gods, with the different actors doing the accents and all, is really neat, I thought.

It sure would be cool if there was a podfic of The Dead Isle with a full cast, doing the different accents, I thought. American. Australian. English. Purva's blended accents... wonder what that would sound like. Accents from all over the world. Like the café.

And then I emailed Sam, becase the idea of a podfic where I could hear little samples of the voices of the café from all over the world was too much to leave abandoned in fantasy land.

As Sam pointed out when I first pitched the idea to him, this is a really, really big book. If we go through with this project, we will need all hands on deck. It's a super big project, and it won't be completed any time soon. It will definitely be a labor of love - but IMO, it will totally be worth the trouble.

This can go two ways. Well. This might go one of these two ways.

1) We could do something like switching off between chapters, or between points of view and passages, but the reader does the dialogue for that passage. For example: one reader could do just the Geppetto passage at the beginning of chapter 4, and another could do the rest of the chapter - there would be no switching off at dialogue lines for the reader acting as Jack or Claire or Ellis, the same reader would do all the dialogue until the end of their passage/chapter.

2) My favorite - the full cast recording. If we get enough male-sounding voices and Aussies/people who are willing to give an Aussie accent a go, then we might very well attempt the full cast recording. There will be lots of bit parts, so if you don't want to commit to a really big part, you could read just a few lines of dialogue for the minor parts. Off the top of my head, there's Sir William, the Divine Father at the London Temple, the Father LaRoche readings, Nicholas, Gregory's sister and brother-in-law, the random crewmen on the ship, random Australians, Saturday, William, random Tribals on the Res, and many more. All you'd have to do is read your lines, send them in, and wait for that chapter to be released!

Of course, that would also mean a rather large committment on the parts of the people doing the primary characters' voices, but it's not as if we're running on a deadline or something. We can take as much time as we need. I figure we can still trade off narration between chapters - get as many people involved as we'd like, that way, for people who want to read but don't want to be a character.

We would also need a number of people to work on compiling all these little sound bites together - or even just to offer advice, if you have experience but don't want to get too involved. If we get enough people, we could even divide up the chapters between groups and, once the primary characters' dialogues have been sent out, then each group could work on their chapters individually, at their own pace. Does that make sense?

So this is me, sounding out the café to figure out how much interest there is in participating. Want to try out that American/Australian/British/German/other accent on a project where, if you mangle it, no one has to ever know it's you? Want to be the voice of Ellis Graveworthy? Would you like to offer us some advice? Do you have audio editing ninja skills? Know about a program/website/thingie that will make this easier for us?

Please comment and let me know if you'd like to participate, in what capacity, and how to contact you.
